Asynchronous motor, also known as "induction motor", refers to a rotor placed in a rotating magnetic field, which obtains a rotational torque under the action of the rotating magnetic field, thus causing the rotor to rotate.
Asynchronous motors were invented by Italian physicist and electrical engineer Ferraris in 1885. In 1889, Mikhail Dolivo Dobrovolsky invented the squirrel cage asynchronous motor.
The development of asynchronous motors has been rapid. For asynchronous motors of the same size, the rated power has increased from 5.5 kW in 1897 to 74.6 kW in 1976. Nowadays, squirrel cage asynchronous motors are the most widely used asynchronous motors.
The rotor of an asynchronous motor is a rotatable conductor, and the stator is the non rotating part of the motor, whose main task is to generate a rotating magnetic field. A rotating magnetic field is not achieved by mechanical means, but by alternating current passing through several pairs of electromagnets, causing their magnetic pole properties to cyclically change, thus equivalent to a rotating magnetic field.
By the relative motion between the rotating magnetic field generated by the stator and the rotor winding, the rotor winding cuts the magnetic induction line and generates induced electromotive force, thereby generating induced current in the rotor winding. The induced current in the rotor winding interacts with the magnetic field to generate electromagnetic torque, causing the rotor to rotate.
When the rotor speed gradually approaches the synchronous speed, the induced current gradually decreases, and the generated electromagnetic torque also decreases accordingly. When the asynchronous motor operates in the motor state, the rotor speed is lower than the synchronous speed. Asynchronous motors are mainly used as electric motors, with a power range from a few watts to tens of thousands of kilowatts. They are the most widely used electric motors in various industries of the national economy and people's daily lives, providing power for various mechanical equipment and household appliances.
For example, machine tools, small and medium-sized steel rolling equipment, fans, water pumps, light industrial machinery, metallurgical and mining machinery, etc., mostly use three-phase asynchronous motors to drive; Single phase asynchronous motors are widely used in household appliances such as electric fans, washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners. Asynchronous motors can also be used as generators for wind power plants and small hydropower stations.
